Two northeast non-profit organizations received a helping hand from SaskTel’s TelCare donation program, assisting the important work the North East SPCA and Humboldt District Hospital Foundation do.

The North East SPCA (NESPCA) received a total of $1,040 to support its operational costs.

According to (NESPCA) acting chair Marianthe Strydom, those costs have recently gone up, so this money could help them stay open for another year.

“We’re busy with our budgets at the moment, so this is the time when you kind of look forward and see whether you’ll be able to keep the shelter open for another year. Something like this was not in our budget, so this is added on top of what we budgeted and it helps a lot to get a surprise like this out of the blue.”

The Hospital Foundation in Humboldt received $5,400 for specialized equipment.

They are currently working towards replacing their anesthesia machines, as well as getting more homecare supply carts.

Both organizations were thankful for the support they received.

“We would like to thank SaskTel TelCare employees for thinking of us every year,” said HDHF executive director Lorrie Bunko. “It was really nice to be able to go in person this year and be able to meet the other charities that were present and learn about them and what they do, and share our fundraising stories. Getting to know the SaskTel employees as well, was great and we can’t thank them enough for their support.”

Across the province this past year, the program raised $128,832 that when combined with SaskTel’s commitment to match 50 per cent of each donation, allowed it to donate a total of $193,250 to 44 charitable and non-profit organizations across Saskatchewan.

“SaskTel employees continue to demonstrate their commitment to the communities they serve through the TelCare program,” said Don Morgan, minister responsible for SaskTel. “I’d like to thank all SaskTel employees for the work they do every day, and for continuing to support those in need.”

SaskTel TelCare is a volunteer organization of SaskTel employees who contribute donations through an automatic payroll deduction, while SaskTel itself donates 50 cents for every dollar employees contribute.

There were over 600 SaskTel employees across nine districts in the province who donated to the fund.

“We make this announcement as we commemorate a new year, but SaskTel employees are giving year-round to support non-profits in the communities where they live and work,” said Doug Burnett, SaskTel President and CEO. “TelCare is a time-honoured tradition for SaskTel and our employees, and it is an area of pride that so many employees continue to be involved with.”
