Local wrestling teams ready to take on all comers at winter games

The 2023 Saskatchewan Winter Games are less than a month away, and wrestlers from the Prince Albert and Northern Regions have their sights set on locking up some medals.

The rosters for both Team Sask. Lakeland and Team Sask. North were announced this week. Roxanne Richards is managing Team Lakeland, while her son Kalin Langford is handling the coaching duties. She told paNOW the youth are training very hard, with four to six practices a week.

“We are definitely looking forward to Feb. 22,” she said.

Trials were held last weekend, and as a result both the Lakeland and North teams both have full and competitive rosters. Noting Team North needed some extra members, Richards explained rules dictates that if a district has weight classes that are empty, then an application can be made by another district with extra athletes to assist. The downside is that youth who fill the vacant spots cannot gain points for their team.

“But the positive thing is they get to wrestle and I think that’s the most important part,” Richards said.

The last winter games were held in 2018 and would have been held last year but was cancelled due to COVID, which adds even more excitement to next month’s event.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how they do in the competition but my biggest focus is they enjoy themselves and they get more opportunity to wrestle,” Richards said.

Members of Team Lakeland include: Juandre Welgemoed, Noah Penney, Tymofiy Kvashulko, Kalyan Mackie, Nathan Kowal, Noah Remy, Ava Fyrk, Gabriella Puentespina, Sydney Rumbaoa, Denaya Neudorf, and Thaddeus Chabaylo.

Team Sask.North is in turn being managed by Mandy Herman and coached by Jeremy Haineault.

Members include: Parker Gobeil, Daniel Daignault, Hayden Cyr, Jonah Sanderson, Brett Petit, Madeline Morgan, Claire Haynes, and Tradyn Lemaigre. Herman told paNOW the team is pretty eager and excited for the games.

“They’re working hard during practices and also putting in extra hours doing weight and cardio training,” she said.

Noting this is her first time managing a team, Herman said they only have three wrestlers from the North and they’re all from Clearwater River.

“La Ronge and Clearwater River are currently the only schools/communities that have a wrestling program but I am working on starting one again in La Loche,” she explained.

The Sask. Winter Games are scheduled to run the week of Feb. 19 in Regina, with the wrestling events set to begin on Feb. 22. Among the 15 other sports being represented at the games are alpine skiing, gymnastics, speed skating, weightlifting and curling.
