Children’s festival could be cancelled due to lack of volunteers

The La Ronge Children’s Festival is in danger of being cancelled due to a lack of volunteers.

Sean Stares is the only remaining member on the committee after several others left in recent years. He explained volunteers either decided to move on to other things, moved out of town or their children are older.

“Right now, it’s not looking like it will be possible for us to have the La Ronge Children’s Festival unless we get volunteers,” Stares said. “We need two co-chairs, people who would write grants and stuff like that and organize meetings. We need to fill several other positions. Usually, a full committee would be about six to seven people.”

The children’s festival has been held in La Ronge for about 20 years. It is typically held on Canada Day in Patterson Park and attracts hundreds of people who go for food, games and entertainment.

It was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID, while in 2022 it was cancelled shortly after starting due to a shooting in the community and a directive from RCMP to shelter in place.

“We were able to bring it together, but we didn’t have enough people even last year,” Stares said. “We really put on a strong festival. We want to make this a pre-pandemic children’s festival this year.”
