Nipawin forward Alex Johnson is having an excellent season on the ice for the Hawks and is now being recognized for his efforts off the ice.

Earlier in January, the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) announced the 12 league wide nominees for the RBC Community Ambassador team. The players were chosen for their commitment to their community both on and off the ice while showing leadership. The Calgary product said being named the Hawks’ representative is humbling.

“It’s a huge honour. Having Nipawin choose me to represent the community is big time,” he said.

Johnson, 20, is one of the Hawks assistant captains and longest tenured players on the team. He contributes to the Hawks’ in-school partnerships and plays floor hockey with local Special Olympic athletes. Johnson said his off ice memories will outlast his playing days in the town.

“I am going to be sad to leave it, but I hope I made a mark, I know it’s made it’s mark on me,” he said.

Each Ambassador will be honoured at an RBC Game Night and will be recognized by a donation from RBC to a school in their local community. Johnson will be honoured at the Jan. 24 game when Nipawin hosts Yorkton.

Fans will vote online for the RBC Community Ambassador of their choice to be honoured as the recipient of the RBC Community Award at the end of the SJHL regular season.

Carter McKay of the Melville Millionaires was last season’s winner. He chose his hometown’s high school in Melville to receive the $2,500 donation.

On the ice, the Hawks travel to Rosetown for a neutral site game against the Kindersley Klippers on Saturday. The pregame show of Nipawin Rona Hawks Hockey begins at 7:15 p.m., face-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
