Nipawin Hawks’ netminder Jackson Fellner has been recognized by the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) for his strong play of late.

Fellner, 19, was named the Goalie of the Week Monday by the SJHL. After collecting his first career shutout on Jan. 13 against Melville, the Regina, Sask. product followed up with another two victories this week. Fellner played in two neutral site games and was victorious in a pair of 3-2 games. He made 25 saves in Wadena on Tuesday in a win over the Yorkton Terriers and another 16 stops in a triumph over Kindersley in Rosetown on Saturday. The Hawks have won five straight and are one of the hottest teams in the league. Fellner said he’s just happy to assist.

“It makes me feel good,” he said upon hearing the news. “The team is on a big streak right now and I am just glad to help out.”

Fellner was acquired in late October from the Melfort Mustangs. Since arriving in Nipawin the second-year puck stopper has 13 wins and seven losses this season. Fellner has a goals-against-average of 2.95 and a save-percentage of .901, numbers that have found the former Weyburn Red Wing inside the top-10 in SJHL goaltending statistics. He admitted the last week has been exciting for his junior career.

“A couple of firsts last week, first shutout, first goalie of the week as well in my second year. Yeah, it’s going well, team is playing great,” he said.

Next up for the Hawks is a home ice showdown with the Terriers. This will be the fifth, and final meeting of the year between the two clubs, after shutting Nipawin out 3-0 in their first game the Hawks have won the last three games. Fellner said the team will bring the same intensity that has allowed them to climb comfortably into a playoff spot.

“We have played them a couple times recently, we know what they are about, we’re hoping we can extend our streak to six,” he concluded.

Face-off is 7 p.m. at the Centennial Arena on Tuesday.
