Ice Wolves seek participants for 11-hour skate-a-thon

Jan 27, 2023 | 4:52 PM

The La Ronge Ice Wolves will be hosting an 11-hour skate-a-thon at the skating oval downtown Feb. 11.

The skate-a-thon was inspired by the Northern Lights Movement for Kids (NLMK) initiative that was started by the family of Jacob Leicht, one of the players who passed away in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018.

“He was a good friend and former teammate of Kyle Schneider, who is our assistant coach,” board member Kelly Graham said. “He heard of this initiative that the family of Jacob Leicht had started, so he brought it to a couple of us on the board and asked if we could do anything, so we just started brainstorming ideas and this is what we came up with.”

The mandate of NLMK is to create opportunities for youth to build relationships and make connections with each other through initiatives that involve education, fitness, fine arts, and more.

Starting at 8 a.m., the Ice Wolves will take 30-minute shifts skating the oval, ensuring there is one Ice Wolf skating for the 11 hours. Leicht’s jersey number was 11.

At the same time, the Ice Wolves board hopes to have a player from La Ronge Minor Hockey and a member of the tri-community skating, taking shifts as well for the duration of the event.

“The organization that Jacob Leicht’s family started is NLMK and part of their mandate is to get youth and community involved together building relationships, so we thought if we could get Ice Wolves skating, if we would get kids with minor hockey skating and we can get community members out there skating, it might just kind of give everyone a common goal and just give us a sense of unity, purpose and oneness,” Graham said.

Once the skate-a-thon concludes at 7 p.m., everyone is invited to stick around for a bonfire, hot dogs, hot chocolate, and skating with the Wolves on the Patterson Park ice rink.
