Icy sidewalks: Who’s responsible for salting them in P.A.?

The sidewalks across Prince Albert are once again icy after more rain hit the city, but who’s responsible for making sure they’re salted or sanded?

According to P.A.’s operations manager Jeff Da Silva, residents, certain businesses, and the city all have sections they’re required to take care of.

Residents are responsible for the sidewalk in front of their homes, while downtown businesses must tend to the ones on their property.

“The city is responsible for anything around any civic facilities, we’ll do pathways through parks, and we’ll do things like that,” said Da Silva.

The city is 100 per cent responsible for roads, but Da Silva explained they don’t tend to every section of every road.

“We do intersections, so we get the stopping sections of roadways, but we won’t typically do mid-blocks unless we’re made aware of a specific problem,” added Da Silva.

As for residential roads, the city monitors them but only works on ones that are in dire need.

If someone is concerned with their street, they can contact the city’s public works department which will assess the severity and determine whether or not crews should properly salt, sand, or clear it.
