Woman accused of attacking Prince Albert senior may seek bail or resolution says lawyer

A Prince Albert senior has taken a turn for the worse after he was assaulted at the care home where he resides — by a stranger who had wandered in from the street.

That was among the statements made by the Crown Prosecutor on Friday when April Ross’s matters were discussed at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

The 40-year-old is facing charges of aggravated assault and uttering threats. Ross was not present for the short hearing. Her lawyer Dale Blenner-Hassett, who had recently taken over the file from legal aid, spoke on her behalf.

Blenner-Hassett requested and was granted an adjournment to April 21, noting it may be for a bail hearing or possibly even resolution.

In the early evening hours of Jan. 2, it’s alleged Ross entered Northcote Manor and proceeded to go through the kitchen drawers. When an elderly resident questioned her about it, Ross then allegedly pulled out a knife and advanced toward the resident.

That’s when the victim, who happens to be a retired correctional officer, got up from the chair he was sitting in to intervene, but was pushed backwards and suffered a serious head injury.

Among those present in court Friday was the victim’s son who told paNOW his father remains at Victoria Hospital and is awaiting another CT scan due to concerns related to a brain bleed.

The son also mentioned his father is suffering hallucinations as a result of the head injury.

Also present in court Friday were residents from Northcote Manor and Mayor Greg Dionne.

Following the incident, Roger Parenteau, executive director of Housing Operations for SHC, issued a statement indicating plans to increase security at the facility.

The Housing Authority also committed to working with police to address problems and concerns related to tenant safety.
