Disqualified driver receives jail sentence after causing pair of crashes

A woman responsible for causing two separate crashes in Prince Albert, all while driving a stolen vehicle, has received a one-year jail sentence and two-year driving prohibition.

Mary Daigneault, 24, appeared by video from the Pine Grove Correctional Centre, when her matters were discussed Monday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

On Sept.15, 2022, police responded to two separate crashes in the city’s west flat area. In the second and more serious incident, the driver of the eastbound vehicle, was found unconscious, lying near the curb. They were taken to hospital and treated for a concussion.

The four occupants of the stolen vehicle, which had been travelling westbound, fled on foot and a gun was later found by officers in the back hatch.

Through their investigation, and based on the damage done to both vehicles, police determined Daigneault would have driving at a high rate of speed.

Daigneault was located later and arrested. While uncooperative with police and attempting to lie about her name, she wore a yellow shirt that matched the description provided by witnesses. She had also been seen wearing a black and white bandana which was found in the abandoned stolen vehicle.

While she was not convicted of vehicle theft, Daigneault entered a number of guilty pleas related to failure to remain at the scene of an accident, providing a false name and breach of a release order. At the time of the crashes, Daigneault was supposed to be on a 24-hour curfew.

Daigneault’s legal aid lawyer noted that while in custody she has completed programming related to religion and leaving gangs. It was also noted, based on her security rating at Pine Grove, she’s considered a low risk to re-offend.

Prior to agreeing to the joint submission, Judge Jeffrey Lubyk noted the risk to the public as well as the fact Daigneault had been driving while disqualified.

“This behavior is not acceptable,” he said.

In addition to her jail sentence, Daigneault will be prohibited from driving for a period of two years, and is prohibited from owning or possessing any firearms for a period of 10 years.

With credit for time spent in remand, she has just over five months left to serve and has indicated plans to move to Saskatoon and live with family.

Daigneault was given two opportunities in court to speak and declined both times.
