Athletes set to give it their all at the NAIG softball camp this weekend

The North American Indigenous Games softball tryouts will take place at the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon where they’re encouraging youth boys and girls to come and give it a shot.

This weekend’s tryouts are for the 16U and 19U boys and girls teams. This is just one of many ID camps happening in the province throughout the winter until the games take place later this year in July in Halifax.

Head coach of the boys U16 boys team, Brock Perry had the chance to chat with paNOW where he explained what athletes can expect at the camp as well as what they are working toward.

“It’s pretty much just an evaluation camp for the kids to come and try out for a spot on the team,” he said. “We have multiple ID camps and then we choose a team of players to bring to our final camp in Saskatoon where we will then have our final camp then come up with our final roster.”

Perry added that this will be his first time attending the games as a coach but was a member of Team Sask. back in 2006 when the games were held in Denver, CO.

He believes that his past experience at the games will provide a lot of help to the team when they head to the 2023 games later this year.

“I think my past experience will help tremendously,” he said. “This is the first North American Indigenous Games in the past few years due to the pandemic. None of these athletes have ever participated in these games before so with my experience as an athlete, I can coach and mentor them.”

Tryouts for the North American Indigenous Games get underway at the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse on Feb. 4. 16U and 19U tryouts for the girls are from 2:30p.m.-4:30p.m. while the boys run from 4:30p.m.-6:30p.m.
