Forward Thomas Wright of the La Ronge Ice Wolves has been named the SJHL DirectWest Rookie of the Month.

“I’m honoured. It’s a good thing to see,” Wright said. “It was with help from my teammates. I wouldn’t have gotten the points without them.”

Wright is now the new leading scorer amongst rookies in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League with 11 goals and 22 assists in 44 games. In January alone, he scored four times and made eight assists.

Wright, who is from Schererville, Indiana, is playing on a Canadian team for the first time. He explained he’s had a positive experience so far and he credits head coach Kevin Kaminski and assistant coach Kyle Schneider for making him into a better hockey player.

“Personally, they helped me work on my explosiveness,” Wright said. “That’s the one part of my game I need to work on. They just told me to keep working on speed and my first few steps. They helped me out a lot on that.”

In addition, Wright has 29 penalty minutes, five powerplay goals, and two game-winning goals.

The Ice Wolves currently sit second in the league with 27 wins and 18 losses in 45 games. With 58 points, the Ice Wolves are in first place in the Sherwood Division.

Wright called La Ronge different than his hometown in the United States. He noted it’s been a good adjustment and experience so far.

“It’s different just the atmosphere. It’s cold,” Wright said. “The population is very small compared to my hometown. I see faces I always see every day compared to my hometown where I see new people every day. [It’s a] different lifestyle.”
