Carlton Trail College to have healthcare programs expanded

Feb 2, 2023 | 5:26 PM

Earlier this week, the Government of Saskatchewan invested more than $5.5 million to help create over 550 new post-secondary training seats across 18 healthcare training programs.

Carlton Trail College (CTC) is a beneficiary of this announcement, as they will be expanding their post-secondary program offerings for 2023-24, especially for students and young adults interested in health careers.

“The demand for trained healthcare workers remains high, especially for rural and remote areas, and so with the support of the Province and post-secondary partners, Carlton Trail College is expanding related programs to help meet this need,” said Amy Yeager, Carlton Trail College president and CEO.

For the college, their healthcare program expansions are set to include Primary Care Paramedic and Continuing Care Assistant.

With the issues in manpower, the healthcare industry has seen, especially these past couple of years, Deanna Gaetz, advancement and external affairs director for CTC, told northeastNOW the benefit will be to the employer.

“To the Saskatchewan Health Authority, as there’s a number of vacancies in both of those areas. The benefit for us will be being able to offer these in multiple locations throughout our region, so making it more accessible, and close to home to more individuals, to make it easier to come to training.”

And by both increasing the seats available, and the general availability of the programs (switching it from part-time to full-time), is how Carlton Trail hopes to accomplish these goals.

“We’re in the business of training people to meet the employment needs of our region and of the province. Healthcare, of course, is at the forefront of those needs, so we are excited to be a part of that and to be able to provide more opportunities throughout the region for individuals looking to go into those healthcare fields,” added Gaetz.

The funds are set to go towards the cost of running these programs, no different than any other, costs that aren’t covered by student tuition, and are over and above what the institution is already doing.

These include things like course training space, instructors, equipment, and more.

According to Gaetz, this is all something the northeast area could definitely benefit from.

“There’s a huge gap right now, and there’s a great need for additional healthcare workers in a number of areas. It’s exciting that we can be a part of recruiting and getting people out into the workforce as fast as possible.”
