Moccasin-making class

Meadow Lake Library celebrates Aboriginal Storytelling Month in Saskatchewan

The Meadow Lake Library is offering a moccasin-making class to celebrate Aboriginal Storytelling Month.

The event will run two days— Feb. 11 and 12, with artist Darlene Littlespruce and her daughter Angela Whitefish leading the workshop.

Library programming clerk Tawn Marshall said the free event, which is already fully booked, will be a fun way to learn the craft and discover a little bit about Indigenous culture at the same time.

The workshop is part of the Library Services for Saskatchewan Aboriginal Peoples (LSAP) program. Everything will be provided to make the moccasins.

The popular class already has a long waitlist in case any spots become available.

“We’ve been doing the storytelling month activities for many years,” Marshall said. “But this is actually the LSAP’s 20th year hosting Aboriginal Storytelling Month. LSAP has amazing, generous sponsors that make it possible to run programs all across the province.”

Marshall said LSAP focuses on creating a cross-cultural understanding of Indigenous peoples’ traditions and teachings.

“The month is really used to promote First Nations and Métis storytelling,” she said. “We have integrated a skills-based project with some storytelling. The [workshop artists] will lead us from start to finish through the moccasin-making process and tell us stories as they [create] them. We basically just spend the whole two days together. It’s an incredible opportunity.”

The supplies for the craft are usually quite expensive, which can be a hindrance. So, the workshop makes it possible for anyone to create their own moccasins since there is no cost for the class.

“It’s a really precious [offering] we’re getting here,” Marshall said. “We could run this class over and over again, and it would be full. Unfortunately, we only have the capacity for so many people. That’s why we have such a long waitlist because people are so interested in it.”
