AHL all-star nod, NHL recall part of banner season for ex-Raider Pachal

The best of the best in the American Hockey League got together for their all-star series on Monday, and Prince Albert Raiders fans may have seen a familiar face during the event. Once granted a spot in the big games, that former Raider made the most of his opportunity.

Former captain Brayden Pachal, who spent parts of three seasons with the team from 2017 to 2019, was named to Team Pacific for the AHL all-star games. Pachal amassed two goals and three assists in four games for Team Pacific.

“It was a little bit of a surprise at first,” Pachal said. “We had (forward Daniil) Miromanov get that honour and unfortunately due to injury, he couldn’t make it. I was super thankful and excited to get a second chance at a fill-in role, and it was a cool experience in general.”

Pachal joked that he would’ve liked to see a hardest hitter event at the skills competition before the games, but he still found some events to suit his skills, including hardest shot (in which he placed third), rapid shooting, and the breakaway challenge (in which he scored on his only shot). Then the games began.

“It was like a mini-round robin tournament,” Pachal said. “We played two ten-minute halves and then the winner of that round robin, the two top teams played each other in the final six-minute game.”

According to Pachal, the laid-back atmosphere of the NHL’s event was present there as well but there was a little more competitive nature. Clearly, that suited him just fine as he picked up two goals in a win over the Central Division team and added three more assists in other games.

“It was a really fun experience,” said Pachal. “It wasn’t as intense as a regular season game would be, but just to show off your skills, playing with the best players in the league, it’s pretty easy to get on the scoresheet here and there.”

That’s not to say the regular season hasn’t seen some scoring for Pachal. With two goals and 11 points in 38 games, he’s already tied his career high. His play with Henderson earned him a recall to the NHL. He’s played nine games so far this season with the Vegas Golden Knights and picked up his first two NHL assists.

“My first point was in Chicago during a 6-on-5 at the end of the game,” Pachal said. “Just a classic Pachal point you could call it. It was a blocked shot that turned into an empty-net goal. I don’t think too many people realized I got the point. I didn’t realize I got the point until after.”

As much as Pachal gets a self-deprecating chuckle out of his first point, it’s no small thing that he was on the ice late defending a lead in the NHL. His defensively responsible game was honed in part by coaches like Marc Habscheid and Jeff Truitt in Prince Albert during his time with the Raiders.

“(Truitt) is a hell of a guy,” Pachal said of the current Raiders coach. “I only had him the one year, but it was a championship year. That team is like family. He texted me to congratulate me on all the accomplishments and checks in here and there.”

Pachal added his Silver Knights, like the Raiders, are in the midst of pushing for a playoff spot at the moment. Their next game falls on Saturday, February 11 against the Ontario Reign.
