Raiders close out road trip in Swift Current in home-and-home opener

Feb 10, 2023 | 12:38 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders (19-27-3-0) are in southwest Saskatchewan for the final time this season, where the Green and Gold take on the Swift Current Broncos (23-21-1-2) at the InnovationPlex.

The game is the final one of this lengthy three-week road trip, which saw the Raiders head to B.C. where they won three out of five games against the Division. Prince Albert closed out the B.C. portion of the trip on the losing end where they were blanked 4-0 in Kelowna.

Swift Current also enters the game coming off a big roadie where they crossed the border going south to have their turn against the US Division teams. Unfortunately for the Broncos, they only came away with one win on the trip against Spokane where they prevailed 3-1. That win versus the Chiefs was also the last game of the trip, as the Broncos enter the game with a win in their back pockets.

This is the third meeting of the season between these clubs. The Raiders dropped both previous contests by 5-4 decisions with the first coming in overtime.

This is the first game of a home-and-home with the Broncos as game two happens Saturday night at the Art Hauser Centre. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.

Entering tonight, the Raiders sit nine points back of the Tigers for the final playoff spot in the East while the Broncos sit just one point back.

Who to Watch

Veteran blueliner Landon Kosior was recently named the league’s player of the week after his impressive outing in B.C. The assistant captain registered eight points (3G, 5A) in four games last week, which included a four-point game in a 6-3 rout of the Victoria Royals. Coming into tonight, the 20-year-old sits one goal back of Olen Zellweger for the league’s top-scoring defensemen.

Captain Evan Herman was also hot for the Raiders out west, scoring five goals over a three-game span at the beginning of the trip. The veteran’s five more points push his season totals to 29. The longtime Raider is also nearing the 200-game milestone as tonight will be game 196.
