Softball standout, Cooper commits to Western Nebraska Cougars

From her earliest days on the mound, North Battleford’s Kayli Cooper dreamed about one day playing softball on the collegiate stage, a dream now set to come true this fall.

A pitcher who has played the last two seasons with Edmonton’s U17 River City Hornets, Cooper has committed to the Western Nebraska Community College Cougars of the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) for September of 2023, fulfilling a goal she’s been working toward for some time.

“I’ve been thinking about committing for a long time and it’s been a really big dream of mine ever since I really started softball,” she said. “So I’m very excited and very proud of all the work I’ve put in to get here.”

It’s been quite the journey for Cooper to get to this point, which has included a pair of provincial ‘B’ titles locally, prior to making the jump to play A-level ball out of Lloydminster in U16.

Following two seasons playing in Lloyd, Cooper then moved on to join the Hornets’ U17 program out of Edmonton, where she’s been the last two seasons. There, she regularly commuted the four-hour drive for games and practices weekly, while living in North Battleford and attending John Paul II Collegiate, currently in her senior year at the high school.

Additionally, Cooper also got a taste of international competition earlier this year, suiting up for Team Canada at the Triple Crown International Challenge in Colorado in June.

Cooper said she’s looking forward to taking the next step in her softball journey with Western Nebraska, as she knew quickly the school made for the right fit.

“I talked a lot with the coach and some of the players there and they were all very nice and made it seem so welcoming, and they had the same goals that I was looking for,” Cooper said. “Their facilities are beautiful and they had all my classes, but it was really the atmosphere of the school and the people there that just made it feel like my home.”

On the classroom end of things, Cooper will enroll in the school’s kinesiology program.
