Week-long celebration planned for tri-communities in March

A week full of activities is being planned in March to mark Canada’s emergence from the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as build a sense of pride and belonging.

“The Tri-Community Celebration will take place from March 20 – 26,” an email from project coordinator Michael Fraser stated.

“It is a free event and will include many activities throughout the week. These activities will include musicians, drum groups, powwow dancers, children’s activities, commemorative murals, storytelling, and a multicultural village. A full calendar of all the events is being created and will be published when it is ready.”

The events are supported by Air Ronge, La Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band. The Tri-Community Celebration is being funded in part by the Government of Canada through a $285,000 contribution from the Commemorate Canada Reopening Fund.

One major event is a free concert scheduled for March 25 at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre.

It will include Conway Kootenay and Howie Miller as the masters of ceremonies, along with entertainers William Prince, Whitehorse, Chubby Cree, Jake Vaadeland and The Sturgeon River Boys, Donny Parenteau, Tristen Durocher, Northwind, LJ Tyson and The Locals, Northern Boyz Drum Group, Lancelot Knight, Its Just Andrea and Poe Lacey.

“Artists and musicians were selected with the tri-community residents as the target audience,” Fraser wrote. “An effort was made to include local musicians and Indigenous artists. The Napatāk Ramble worked hard to put this list together. We have some of the best acts in Canada joining us on March 25.”

On behalf of the Tri-Community Celebration Committee, the Town of La Ronge was seeking proposals from interested local artists for the installation of three commemorative murals. Proposals were accepted until Feb. 6.
