Local lacrosse player to continue career in Colorado

It’s been a busy and satisfying few days for Prince Albert Lacrosse. Earlier this week, three of their players were selected in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League draft. Prior to the draft, however, another young athlete took a major step forward in his career.

Aidan Horn has signed on to play at Colorado State University of Pueblo. The Thunderwolves play a 13-game schedule against teams from the central United States, including Colorado College.

“I’ve never really had a team of that calibre tell me they want me to come play for them,” Horn said. “It’s always been me signing up to go try out. But when a university team actually wants you to come play, it’s a pretty awesome feeling.”

The journey of finding the right college took some time, as Horn decided he wanted to play somewhere close to the mountains, and that narrowed his selection process. Once he found CSU Pueblo, he found the interest was mutual.

“I sent some video, and they liked how I looked,” Horn said. “They showed their interest, talking about, ‘We like how you play, you use both hands and you’re physical.’ That got the ball rolling and we went on from there.”

Much of Horn’s preparation between now and then is focused on keeping his stick skills sharp and staying active in the gym. Keeping himself engaged in the game is no problem for him, as he still does work with the Team Sask Program and plays with the Junior B Predators and the 16U Attack.

“There’s so much travel, there’s going to be so many different styles of lacrosse,” Horn said. “I think my coaches on my previous teams have done a good job preparing me for the practices and what to expect. But when you’re actually playing, it’s going to feel so much faster.”

According to Horn, his coaches have prepared him very directly for the college route, often from personal experience.

“They’ve prepared me to know what to expect when I get there,” Horn said. “I’ve had coaches that have played lacrosse in Division 1. They’ve pulled all their college drills into ours. When I watch these teams practice, it’s like I already know what these guys are doing and I’ll fit right in with this perfectly. It’s massive for us.”

Horn added he’s seen the sport of lacrosse grow “exponentially” in Prince Albert and he’s happy to see it’s only getting bigger.
