Raiders kick off home-and-home weekend against Blades

Feb 24, 2023 | 12:00 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders (23-28-3-0) head south to renew their Highway 11 rivalry tonight when they face off against the Saskatoon Blades (37-13-3-1) at the SaskTel Centre.

The Raiders come into the contest riding a four-game win streak, which includes victories against Swift Current, Regina, Moose Jaw, and more recently Brandon. It was a thrilling win against the Wheat Kings where P.A. came away in overtime by a 4-3 decision. The Green and Gold look to stay hot against a just as hot Saskatoon squad.

Like Prince Albert, the Blades are also riding a four-game win streak after their successful swing through B.C. Saskatoon won four out of five games with their only loss of the road trip coming against Kamloops, which was also their first game of the trip. Despite the recent success Saskatoon last played six days ago, and with the Raiders beginning to heat up for a playoff push, the game should be nothing short of action-packed.

The game is the seventh meeting of the season between the clubs with the Blades leading the season series 5-1. Game two of the home-and-home weekend is slated for tomorrow night at 7 p.m. inside the Art Hauser Centre.

Heading into the game, the Raiders currently sit six points back of the Medicine Hat Tigers for the final playoff spot in the East. After tonight, Prince Albert has 13 games remaining on the schedule.

Who to Watch

Assistant captain Sloan Stanick had the game-winning goal in Brandon on Monday afternoon, boosting his totals this season to 47 points on the year. The OT winner against the Wheaties was also made for the highlight reel, going between the legs to secure the win and to help him earn the game’s first star.

Veteran Keaton Sorensen had a hat trick against Brandon, an assist hat trick at that. The Red Deer product had a helper on the three final PA goals, including the pass to set up Stanick for the game-winner. The 21-year-old’s three-point performance helped him inch closer to the 100-career point club, where he currently sits at 86.

Captain Evan Herman had a pair of goals on Monday which helped the Raiders tie the game not once, but twice in Brandon. The kid from The Pas, Man., earned the game’s third star for his performance while improving his point totals to 33 on the campaign.
