Stanick caps thrilling comeback win for Raiders

SASKATOON, SK – For the second time in a week, the Prince Albert Raiders trailed by multiple goals and were in need of an offensive outburst to claw out a win. For the second time in a week, they got all the offense they needed.

Six different players scored, and the Raiders came from behind to erase a 5-2 deficit and beat the Saskatoon Blades 6-5 in overtime on the road. Sloan Stanick scored the overtime winner for the second consecutive game, while Ryder Ritchie, Hayden Pakkala, Landon Kosior, Niall Crocker, and Aiden Oiring scored in regulation.

The Blades started hot, with a powerplay goal by Jake Chiasson late in their first man-advantage of the game. Then, after stymieing a Raiders power play, they got a goal just moments later from Brandon Lisowsky, who cashed the rebound of a shot off the left pad of Max Hildebrand.

Ritchie had the Raiders answer for the first period. On the power play, he took a feed from Kosior and ripped home a one-timer for his 16th goal and 40th point of the season.

It took a long time for the second period to start due to a power outage in the rink, and when it finally did start it brought with it a familiar script. Another power play for Saskatoon led to another Chiasson goal right at the mouth of the crease and another two-goal lead.

The Blades stretched their lead to 4-1 early in the third when Vaughn Watterodt sniped one over the shoulder of Hildebrand from the bottom of the right circle. This time, the Raiders got their answer shorthanded. Pakkala broke in alone, shielded the puck well against a diving back checker, and stepped to his forehand to snap home his seventh.

It looked like the Blades would snuff the Raiders’ momentum when, not even 30 seconds later, they scored their fifth of the night on a point shot by Aiden De La Gorgendiere, but the Raiders were just getting started. First, Kosior snapped home a point shot of his own through a long screen on the power play. Then, on another power play, Oiring broke into the zone with speed and fed Crocker out front, and he made no mistake from in close.

Oiring provided the Raiders first even-strength goal when he sent a laser of a shot bar-down over the shoulder of Austin Elliott. In total, the Raiders rattled off three goals in less than three minutes.

Both teams had chances late in regulation, but the Raiders only needed one good rush in overtime. Stanick’s first shot was stopped, and so was Kosior’s follow-up chance, but Stanick fought for the rebound, picked it up, and tucked home his 19th for another overtime winner.

The rematch of that thriller is just around the corner, as the two teams meet again on Saturday, February 25 at the Art Hauser Centre at 7:00.
