North Battleford’s Mya Lavallee is headed to Lakeland College for the next chapter in her volleyball journey.

Lavallee has committed to the Lakeland Rustlers volleyball program for the fall of 2023, fulfilling a dream she’s been working towards for some time, to take her game to the post-secondary level.

“I’m very excited; I’m used to commitment with my club volleyball team right now, so I’m excited to take an even bigger step with the Rustlers to continue my career in volleyball,” she said.

“I’m glad that it’s close to home, so I still have the option of visiting home when I can, and Austin [Dyer] is a great coach and just won Coach of the Year for the ACAC, so it just confirmed that I made the right decision.”

Currently, in her senior year at North Battleford Comprehensive High School, Lavallee played volleyball throughout her time at NBCHS, as well as with the Battlefords Volleyball Club (BVC) until last year, when she moved over to the Sask Stealth volleyball program, based out of Regina.

Last year, Lavallee, who plays setter, won a bronze medal at provincials with the senior Vikings team, and silver medal at provincials with her club team.

She was also recently named to Team Saskatchewan’s volleyball squad for the 2023 North American Indigenous Games, which will be held this summer in Halifax, July 15 to 23.

Lavallee said she’s looking forward to what the next chapter holds with the Rustlers.

“It’s always been my goal [to play college volleyball], ever since I started when I was in elementary school,” she said. “I love volleyball so much and I’m just really glad to have gotten the opportunity to make my dream come true.”

In the classroom, Lavallee will study Education with the goal of becoming a teacher or speech pathologist.

Lakeland finished first in the ACAC women’s volleyball standings last season, with an 18-1 record.
