Melfort is set to host the Curling Day in Canada Festival in 2024.

For those who tuned into TSN on Saturday, you may have noticed some exciting news for Saskatchewan as Curling Day in Canada is coming to Melfort next year.

Curling club board member Kerrie de Gooijer told northeastNOW everyone at the Melfort Curling Club found out during the broadcast.

“We submitted an application but it was one of those things you never actually expect to be chosen,” she said.

With the news just coming out, there are no plans set in stone for the event yet. The club is currently working on planning some fun events for curlers in the community and those travelling to see what Melfort has to offer.

“This brings a whole element of bringing the whole country and having the whole country involved in the momentum as well, which is really exciting,” de Gooijer explained.

In the application, Melfort Curling Club boasted about their successful year and how they are seeing growth in the sport.

Not only are they reflecting on the past but they are envisioning what the future holds for the curling community and how much room there is to grow.

“We have a very welcoming curling community as it is and we really want new people to come out,” de Gooijer said. “It’s a lot about socializing. It’s like a reason to get out of the house.”

If you want to join the league but don’t have a team, the curling club will pair you up with a group of eager curlers to enjoy the sport with.

Although 2024 is a while away, there is still one event for the public to enjoy prior to the end of the season.

“The St. Patty’s Day FunSpiel is coming up. Lots of fun and green beer. Music on the ice,” she said.

The event is on Friday, March 17 with registration available through the Melfort Curling Club’s Facebook page.

For those wanting to help out with festival activities, volunteers are needed for all aspects of the upcoming Curling Day in Canada events. You can contact the Melfort Curling Club for more information.
