North Stars Bell, Ewart named to SJHL Players of Week

A pair of Battlefords North Stars have been recognized in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Players of the Week.

Forward Kian Bell has been named SGEU MVP of the Week, and blue liner Tynan Ewart has been selected as SuperU Defenceman of the Week.

Bell is coming off his hottest week of the season, racking up seven goals and 13 points in just three games for the Stars.

Bell opened the week with a dominant five-goal, six-point performance Tuesday night, to lead the Stars to an 8-2 victory over Yorkton, followed up by a three-point game (1G, 2A), including his 50th goal of the season in Friday night’s 9-2 win over Melville.

The Fall River, NS., product then added his 51st Saturday, in another four-point night (1G, 3A) to lead the Battlefords to a 6-2 win over Notre Dame.

Bell became just the sixth player in North Stars history to score 50 goals in a season, and just the fifth player to do so in the entire SJHL since 2000.

This is Bell’s fourth time being named SJHL MVP of the Week, in addition to being named MVP of the Month once.

SuperU Defenceman of the Week – Tynan Ewart

Ewart is coming off a five-point week over the three games, picking up a pair of assists Tuesday and a third Friday. He then capped the weekend with a goal and a helper against the Hounds, scoring the opening goal of the hockey game.

In addition to his offensive contribution, Ewart was also not on the ice for a single goal against over the three games.

Now tied for eighth in league scoring with 51 points in just 50 games, Ewart’s total is the most by a North Stars defenceman since Fraser Allan scored 52 back in the 2006-07 season, 16 years ago.

Ewart paces all SJHL defenceman in total points (51), points per game *min. 30 games (1.02), and assists (44).

This is Ewart’s third selection as SJHL Defenceman of the Week, in addition to being named Defenceman of the Month once.

Bell, Ewart, and their North Stars’ teammates will return to action this weekend for a home-and-home versus the division-rival Broncos, Friday in North Battleford and Saturday in Humboldt.

Both games will be available on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin each night at 7 p.m., with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
