Light of Christ’s EMBM, JPII schools celebrate Carnaval Chez Nous

Mar 3, 2023 | 3:17 PM

Kids at École Monseigneur Blaise Morand (EMBM) were jigging and playing their wooden spoons as they took part in Carnaval Chez Nous Friday.

The event runs for eight days with students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 from EMBM and John Paul II Collegiate (JPII) in North Battleford taking part in a series of activities to celebrate French culture.

EMBM Principal Theo Masich said he is excited about the event as a great way to help kids learn about and enjoy French culture. The plan is to have the event every year.

“We’re a French immersion school, and obviously part of what we do is celebrate Francophone and Métis culture because that’s a part of who we are,” he said. “We’re not a Francophone school per se, but language and culture go hand in hand. So, we are doing a number of [events] to do our own version of a Carnaval here at EMBM and with JPII as well. We have French immersion students in Kindergarten to Grade 12. Our two schools are joining forces, and we’re going to have some real fun together.”

The high school kids would be coming over to EMBM for certain activities during the festival.

Next on March 6, students will take part in Cabane à sucre— Sugar Shack, tasting the traditional French Canadian treat of maple syrup taffy in the snow. March 7 there will also be session called Explorateurs— a fur treasure hunt, complete with fake furs hidden in the snow for kids to find and take to little trading posts that will be set up.

“It’s a learning activity, as well as having fun outside,” Masich said. “And, there will be prizes for that.”

March 8 offers sleigh rides and hot chocolate. Then, March 9 is Métis culture day when kids can learn about and how to make a mini version of a Métis sash. Then, the event will have a Big Carnaval Day on March 14, with JPII French immersion students leading the teams with EMBM kids for a full day of carnaval outdoor activities and Queue de castor/Beaver Tail treats.

The celebration concludes March 15 with all the French immersion students and staff from EMBM and JPII gathered for an assembly to sing traditional folk songs and watch a French movie.

“The hope of the Carnaval Chez Nous organizers is to make this an annual event that will grow in scope in the coming years to reach the broader community,” Light of Christ Catholic Schools director of education Cory Rideout said in a release. “Light of Christ’s strategic planning process is designed to support and strengthen their longstanding French Immersion program and further enhance this unique learning opportunity in the Battlefords.”
