Mar 4, 2023 | 2:00 PM

Coming off a 5-3 loss to the Humboldt Broncos Friday night on home ice, the Battlefords North Stars will get another shot at their division rivals Saturday in Humboldt to wrap the season series.

The Broncos are the lone team in the league to have a winning record over the Stars this season, as the Battlefords are 1-3-1-0 against them in the season series, heading into Saturday night’s tilt.

The North Stars (44-5-2-1) enter play having already locked up first place overall with wins in four of their last five games. Friday’s loss marked the first regulation defeat on home ice for the team this year.

The Broncos (37-13-1-0) enter play third overall, but just a single point back of Flin Flon for second, while holding two games in hand. With Friday’s win, Humboldt have now taken three straight heading into play.

Stars’ winger Steven Kesslering and Broncos’ forward Matthew Van Blaricom each enter play coming off two-goal games to open the weekend.

Kesslering has five goals and 10 points over his last five games, including at least a single goal in four straight, for 33 goals (third in SJHL) and 59 points (sixth in SJHL) on the season.

Van Blaricom scored both of his in the third period, to give him five goals and eight points in his last 10 games, and 23 points in 29 games since joining the Broncos this season.

Kian Bell, who picked up an assist Friday, leads the Stars and entire SJHL with 51 goals and 92 points, having scored eight goals and 16 points over his last five games. Holden Doell sits second with 90 points in 45 games, with two goals and 11 points over his last four.

Alec Saretzky leads the Broncos in goals (25) this season, and scored the game winner, after Humboldt’s leading point scorer Cage Newans (54 points) notched the tying tally in the third to go with an assist in a two-point night.

In goal, Josh Kotai will make his second straight start for the North Stars this weekend. Kotai is 30-4-2-1 this season with a league leading 2.43 goals against average and .934 save percentage.

Humboldt will start Benjamin Motew, after Jared Picklyk got the start Friday. Motew is 16-5-0-1 this season with a 2.62 goals against average and .907 save percentage.

Saturday’s game will be available on 1050 CJNB, with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 7 p.m., and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m. on the NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast.
