International Women’s Day was observed in La Ronge with a 10-hour event organized by the Lac La Ronge Indian Band.

“Today is the day we celebrate women’s roles and to recognize and create awareness [that] we need to empower our women to chase their dreams, and to be able to look after themselves with self-care activities like we are doing today,” said Indian Residential School and Cultural Support supervisor Oliveen Sanderson.

International Women’s Day is held annually on March 8 and it’s a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

The come and go event held at the Kitsaki Hall and the Silver Building at Morin’s Hill included music and art therapy, ribbon skirt making, storytelling, beading, yoga, haircuts, facials, foot care, aroma therapy and more. Lunch and supper is also being provided.

“This is the feedback we got from the women that we did a survey on,” Sanderson said about the activities offered. “We figured we wanted to do it the way they want it done, and that’s why it is important we work with our women and try give them what they want in terms of their own self-care activities.”

Support worker Terri Charles explained society is moving at a fast pace and it is important to recognize the roles women have in and out of the home.

She noted medicine teachings were also being offered to show the value of getting out on the land.

“It’s always an honour to take care of our women because it is, in our tradition, that women are very important because she’s the firekeeper, she takes care of the family,” Charles said. “A lot of them don’t get recognized, so this makes them feel important in their roles in society as women.”
