The Hawks were shutout 3-0 by Joel Favreau and the Melfort Mustangs on Friday in Nipawin.

The loss capped Nipawin’s regular season that saw the team improve from 17 wins last Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) to 26 this season. The Hawks were 11th last year, this season the club is seventh and will meet the Humboldt Broncos in the playoffs.

Following the game, Captain Maguire Ratzlaff credited Favreau with a strong game and the Hawks’ fans for showing their support.

“He played really well, and awesome attendance and good support from the fans,” he said.

Hayden Tuba, Dawson Leroux, and Ben Tkachuk scored the Mustangs goals in the win that give Melfort a shot at home ice versus La Ronge in the opening round of the postseason.

Nipawin will travel to Humboldt on March 17 and 18 for games one and two. Ratzlaff said the team accomplished their initial goal of making the playoffs and are confident heading into the best-of-seven series.

“I think we’ve been playing some really good hockey against all those top teams. It’s good to have that confidence going into the playoffs,” the 19-year-old Abbortsford, B.C. product added.

Jayden Kraus, 16, made his debut start in goal for the Hawks in the loss. The Prince Albert resident made 33 saves in the loss, but was named the first star of the game. Favreau made 24 saves to pick up his third shutout of the season including the blanking in his final regular season SJHL game.

The Hawks will have their awards banquet on Saturday and celebrate the season. The team will play in the playoffs for the first time since March 11, 2020. Ratzlaff said the players will enjoy the banquet and then begin preparing for the Broncos.

“Getting mentally prepared, as well as fine tuning our systems, getting ready, building our confidence, just getting the team together, and making sure moral is good going into it,” Ratzlaff said.

Playoff ticket information will be released by the team on Monday.
