La Ronge man charged with assault on a peace officer, electronic impulse device deployed

A La Ronge man is facing several charges after a traffic stop on Sunday.

According to an RCMP media release, at approximately 12:56 a.m., officers responded to a report of a vehicle speeding along Highway 102. Officers located the vehicle driving on Cook Crescent in La Ronge and conducted a traffic stop.

The driver, who was the lone occupant, exited and attempted to flee from police on foot. Officers immediately followed and attempted to arrest the man, who continued to resist arrest.

Efforts to arrest him required the deployment of a police intervention tool, a conducted energy weapon. The male was safely taken into custody and did not require medical attention.

One of the responding police officers sustained minor injuries during the arrest. A search of the male resulted in officers locating and seizing a machete.

As a result of the investigation, 32-year-old Jared Ballantyne from La Ronge is charged with assault causing bodily harm on a peace officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, resisting arrest, carrying a concealed weapon, and failure to comply an undertaking,

Ballantyne was scheduled to appear in La Ronge Provincial Court on March 13.
