Hawks host Humboldt on home ice

An old hockey adage states you aren’t in trouble in a playoff series until you lose on home ice. That’s the mindset for the Hawks going into game three of their first round Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) series with the Humboldt Broncos that continues Tuesday in Nipawin.

On Friday and Saturday the Hawks were outclassed by Humboldt at the Elgar Petersen Arena losing both games by a combined score of 12-2. Nipawin bench boss Tad Kozun admitted the weekend was rough for his young team, but he’s confident heading home for back-to-back games despite a two-nothing deficit in the best-of-seven series.

“Now that we’re back home we have to take care of our own building and that starts tonight for game three,” Kozun said.

The Broncos were up 3-0 after the first period in both games one and two at the Elgar Petersen Arena and cruised to 5-1 and 7-1 wins. Kozun hasn’t been pleased with his team’s compete level and expects much better in front of a raucous crowd at the ‘Cage.’

“We definitely haven’t played our best hockey in the series yet,” he said. “We’re expecting us to bring our ‘A’ game here tonight and really make a difference in this series and turn the tides more into our favour.”

If Nipawin hopes to get back into the series the special team battle needs to also turn in their favour. The Broncos have four power-play goals in eight opportunities, the Hawks are scoreless in nine man-advantage chances in the series.

Face-off for games three and four on Tuesday and Wednesday is 7 p.m. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. for walk-up ticket sales.

Game five is slated for Friday at the Elgar Petersen Arena.
