Taxes and new fire stations headline P.A. council’s upcoming meeting

Mar 27, 2023 | 11:53 AM

Prince Albert’s council meets Monday where taxes and new fire stations will be a big focus.

Up for discussion is a 2.86 per cent increase in taxes for all accessed properties in the city.

According to the city’s administration, over $1.5 million needs to be raised to cover the already approved operating and capital budgets as well as the funds being put in reserve.

Representatives from the River Bank Development Corporation and Saskatchewan Landlord Association have asked to speak at the meeting.

Council is also expected to approve the first and second readings of the motion. Any motion needs to pass three votes before it becomes official.

The city’s administration is also recommending council approve allocating two parcels of land for future fire stations.

One would be near 15th Street and 15th Avenue and the other on the opposite side of town, on 28th Street near the Alfred Jenkins Field House.

At an executive committee meeting held earlier this month, Fire Chief Kris Olsen said the city already has the staff and equipment for both stations. The reason they want these new locations is to improve response time in the areas.

If approved, the city’s administration would still need to review the projects before anything can officially move forward.

Also on council’s agenda are discussions on how to cover the 2022 snow management costs which were nearly $880,000 more than budgeted, whether to officially approve the creation of three new apartment buildings, and whether to move forward with the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan’s request to build an office and child care centre in the city.

Council’s meeting gets underway at 5 p.m.
