It has been just three years since a group of friends came together with the idea to start crafting their own vodka. Since then, it’s been a whirlwind of success for Phantom Light Distillery with innovative technology, international recognition, major partnerships, and new products. Despite the incredible growth, the focus on quality remains a top priority.

“We are a small batch distillery and everything has to be perfect before it leaves. So, we’re focused on slow growth. There have been a few big bumps on this dynamic road but now that we have figured it out, consistency rules the day,” said company partner Brendan Miller.

Phantom Light’s Premium Flagship Vodka is distilled and filtered using advanced technology. The proprietary process produces an ultra-clean alcohol that many have agreed compares to some of the best in the world.

“The goal was to clear out impurities from the vodka creating a vodka that actually smells good, and has an exceptionally smooth taste, which is how the Phantom came to be,” said co-founder Drew Martin.

With a hint of vanilla, caramel and wheat, the aroma draws you in while the smooth taste brings customers back for more. The less impurities in the alcohol, the smoother it becomes – which is why Phantom Light’s vodka has such a velvety finish.

The product was first launched in Prince Albert in 2020 but has since expanded to stores and restaurants throughout Saskatchewan. Phantom Light is also the house vodka for the all the SIGA casinos in the province as well as the official vodka of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) and Huskie Athletics (University of Saskatchewan) among many other great partnerships with organizations and businesses big and small.

“We firmly believe in achieving growth through giving back to the communities we work, live and play in. In 2022, we gave back over $60,000 in sponsorships and donations to grass roots organizations that keep our communities strong. We are a different kind of distillery and we will “walk the walk” when it comes to supporting local. We love this province as we were all born and raised here, and we are committed to supporting our communities the best we can,” Miller said.

Phantom Light Distillery has already received international recognition. Their vodka won a Platinum award at the International Spirits Competition (SIP) – an event heralded as the ‘Super Bowl of all tastings and award competitions” where consumers are the judges. There were hundreds of entries and Phantom Light was one of only 7 vodkas from around the globe to receive the Platinum designation.

Now that they have perfected vodka, the group is starting to launch new products.

“Our new spiced vodka is all natural and is going to compete with the spiced rums of the world,” said Miller. “It is great mixed into a cocktail or simply on the rocks. We are just delving into the many possibilities that this spirit is going to have but it’s really quite delicious. It smells good too.”

Phantom Light was inspired by a renowned ‘ghost light’ in St. Louis, SK. Legend has it that a conductor died in a train accident on the tracks there in the early 1930’s or ’40s. Many swear that when you stand in that spot, you can see the light of the headless conductors lantern as he searches for his head along side the tracks.

While the folklore is intriguing to those curious about the vodka’s name, it’s the captivating flavour and smoothness of Phantom Light Distillery vodka that is capturing attention from people around the globe.
