Drama club hosts first play since 2019

Apr 18, 2023 | 3:01 PM

Peanut Productions is celebrating 30 years of promoting arts and culture in the tri-communities.

The drama club, which hasn’t held a show since 2019 due to COVID, returns this week with a PG-rated comedy called Farce of Habit by Jones Hope Wooten. Tickets for the Wednesday and Thursday shows are still available, while Friday and Saturday showings have already sold out.

“The community is very supportive. Everyone we have talked to are eager to have the theatre back in town,” play director Glenys Plunz said.

“We do appreciate that it is an opportunity for everyone to see live theatre. We do also believe our presence in the community is giving an incentive to the young children to take part in their drama opportunities at the schools.”

Farce of Habit takes place in a fishing lodge in Alberta during a massive storm. Lodge owner D. Gene Wilburn, his wife, Wanelle, their son Ty and wife Jenna, host a variety of interesting and unexpected guests, while Wilburn’s sister Maxie gets involved in a bizarre undercover police assignment, all while there is a murderer on the loose.

The play would have been performed in 2020, but it was delayed until this week because of COVID.

“We met a few times before Christmas and then we got serious with the rehearsals in the second week of January, so basically from January until now we have been rehearsing,” Plunz said. “It’s a very heavy time commitment for the actors and the backstage people.”

Peanut Productions was launched in 1991 as a way to raise funds to support the La Ronge Health Centre, which was being constructed at the time. Since then, the club has raised more than $46,000 for community projects, all while keeps tickets affordable.

“Two of the members are original to that very first cast (Jan Senik and Terry Desroches),” Plunz said. “Other than that, there’s many actors who have come and gone. Some stay for one year and others for several years. There’s a lot of history and a lot of people who have been involved over the years.”

Tickets for Farce of Habit are $10 for adults and $8 for those 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased from the cast and crew, the Woodland Visitor Centre in Air Ronge and Watt Agencies in La Ronge. Tickets are also expected to be available at the door on Wednesday and Thursday.

Showings on Wednesday and Thursday are at 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

“Please come on out. Enjoy some good comedy. There will be lots of laughs. Tell your friends as well,” Plunz said.
