Lac La Ronge Indian Band athlete Sage Roberts, 17, has been selected to play in two upcoming national tournaments in hockey and softball.

Roberts will first be headed to the 2023 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships in Winnipeg from May 7-13. That event will be followed by the North American Indigenous Games in Halifax from July 15-23.

He will be representing Team Saskatchewan at both national tournaments.

“I’m pretty excited for both of the tournaments. It will be a good experience for me,” Robert said.

In recent years, Roberts has played in the Indigenous Sports Academy’s U17 Eagles based in Saskatoon. In the 2022-23 season, he served as captain of the team, which was only one game shy of making the playoffs.

Roberts is also a member of the Prince Albert Astros and he has played softball for at least 10 years.

Shawn Phaneuf is the head coach in hockey for Team Saskatchewan and he explained it is a great honour for Roberts to be chosen to be on the team. He noted Team Saskatchewan is usually regarded as one of the top teams in the tournament.

“I think the biggest thing is Sage’s work ethic. He’s continuously progressed throughout his minor hockey career,” Phaneuf said.

“One of the most noticeable things about Sage is that he never quits. He’s always one of the hardest working players on the ice at all times and he always competes really hard. He’s always able to control his emotions and he shows a lot of leadership qualities on the ice.”
