The Nipawin Chapter of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library is smiling thanks to cookie sales at Tim Hortons.

The annual Smile Cookie campaign hosted by the coffee shop runs this week with 100 per cent of the proceeds from its Nipawin location being donated to the library.

Last year, around $8,000 was raised. The hope is to top that this year as the price of the iconic chocolate chip cookies hand decorated by local employees has increased from $1 to $1.50.

Nipawin Kinsmen Jeff Hrynkiw told northeastNOW, thanks to fundraisers like this, they aren’t just benefiting children temporarily but setting them up for long-term success.

“The more books that you can get in the hands of young kids, the higher their chances are of graduating high school, and potentially going into secondary education.”

Meanwhile, all the funds will be used to help the Dolly Parton Imagination Library continue supporting children in the Nipawin area.

Lisa Vavra, a coordinator at the Nipawin and Area Early Years Family Resource Centre, said it was started by a collaboration of groups, which includes the Nipawin Kinsemn, who wanted to promote literacy in the community.

She adds fundraisers are an integral part of ensuring the program thrives in the community.

“One child for a year (costs) $46.20,” Vavra explained. “The program is for newborns to age five. So once they turn five then they graduate out of the program.”

The Smile Cookie campaign runs until May 7.
