May 3, 2023 | 5:36 PM

More fire bans have been announced for several municipalities in the North West region of Saskatchewan due to continuing dry and windy conditions in the area.

Bans have been issued for the Rural Municipality (RM) of North Battleford #437, the RM of Medstead #497, the RM of Meota, the Village of Meota, the Resort Village of Metinota, the Resort Village of Cochin, the RM of Mervin #499, and the RM of Frenchman Butte #501.

For the RM of North Battleford #437, burning permits will not be issued until further notice. Residents are asked to refrain from lighting open burning barrels and garbage pits at this time.

For the RM of Frenchman Butte #501, a level one fire ban remains in effect. All open burning in the RM is banned. There are exemptions to the level one ban, provided there is supervision and a fire extinguish plan, for recreational camp fires and barbecues.

The RM of Meota area will see a fire ban in effect beginning at midnight on May 3rd.

RM of Meota Reeve Sherry Jimmy, the chair of the fire committee, said the fire ban is being issued effective at midnight tonight, in the area of the RM of Meota, also covering the Village of Meota, the Resort Village of Metinota, and the Resort Village of Cochin, because the “fire hazard has now jumped to extreme,” as reflected on the updated Saskatchewan Daily Wildfire Situation Map .

There is a fire currently burning on the east side of the RM, by Moosomin First Nation, in the Cochin area.

“All of those factors have come together in the last 24 hours for us to put a fire ban on,” Jimmy said.

Burning of outdoor fires is not permitted, as well as controlled burns, fireworks, campfires and fire pits.

The ban is in place until further notice and conditions improve.
