Workshop being held in Hudson Bay on domestic violence

May 6, 2023 | 8:00 AM

Hudson Bay is hosting experts in the field of domestic violence to spread awareness and education about the topic.

On Jun. 13, anyone aged 15 and older can attend a workshop being hosted by the North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) which will focus on how to identify abuse, how to stay safe, and where people can turn to for help.

Hayley Genaille, a child protection worker with Social Services, organized the event and told northeastNOW she picked discussion topics based on what she felt was a need in the community.

“(Knowing) signs of an abusive relationship versus a healthy relationship… because a lot of the abuse kind of goes under the radar, especially if it’s manipulation or controlling behaviours that aren’t necessarily like physical.”

Eventgoers will also learn about the cycle of abuse, who is at risk, how to make a safety plan, and resources they can utilize.

Genaille explained that although they can put professional support in place, one of the most important things a victim of domestic abuse can have is an informal support system.

Meanwhile, those wanting to learn how to help victims of domestic violence are welcome to attend and learn how to be a support system for someone facing that situation.

“It’s open to the whole community. It’s going to be confidential. I would encourage anybody to come and if they’re afraid they can call and we can talk about it some more,” added Genaille.

The event is from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge. All inquiries can be made to Hayley Genaille at 306-920-7518.
