Approximately 40 companies or educational providers participated in the Lac La Ronge Indian Band Career Fair.

The event was held May 8 and 9 at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre and it was co-hosted by Lands and Resources and the post-secondary departments. Community liaison officer Robin Cook explained nearly 300 people attended the career fair on the first day.

“When I reached out to collaborate with the education department, there’s a lot of smaller companies in the resource sector that wanted exposure and I figured what better way than a career fair,” he said.

“What better way for students to be exposed to what kind of career options they have in front of them.”

Some of the organization involved in the career fair were post-secondary institutions like the First Nations University of Canada, Northlands College, the University of Regina and University of Saskatchewan. Other employers like Cameco, CIBC, Co-op, Northern Lights School Division, the RCMP and SaskPower were also in attendance.

The career fair has become an annual event for the Lac La Ronge Indian Band. It not only serves to recruit employees for the band’s own range of businesses and offices, it also assists the operations of other bands, organizations or companies in northern Saskatchewan.

The target organizers had for attendees was Grades 10 and up. Adult education students visited the fair, as well as students from Churchill Community High School and Senator Myles Venne School.

“We liked the numbers, so I think we will be doing this annually now,” Cook said.
