Preds pick up pair of wins over Moose Jaw in home opening doubleheader

The Prince Albert Predators improved to 5-1 on the season after Saturday’s doubleheader, defeating the Moose Jaw Mustangs 21-8 in game one and 15-4 in game two in front of a packed house in Kinsmen Arena.

The wins come after a successful road trip last weekend, coming away with two of three games with victories against Moose Jaw and Swift Current.

Brayden Rieger led the Preds in the points department in game one, tallying a whopping five goals and eight assists while Matthew Cudmore wasn’t too far behind with six goals and four assists. Additionally, seven more PA players had multi-point performances while another five also found the scoresheet with a singular point. In total, the slaughter saw 53 goals and assists being registered to the Blue and Gold.

For the Mustangs, Braxton Mac Angus paved the way in game one scoring seven goals while Jacob Gyman had a goal and a pair of assists. Lucas Salkin had three assists while Ryder Farnsworth and Carter Williams each had a helper.

Carter Altstadt and Mason Hawkes both spent time in the crease for PA in game one, combining for 22 saves on 30 shots while Bryden Kerr tallied 46 stops on 67 shots for Moose Jaw.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (game one)

Cudmore led the offense-heavy game two for the Preds, scoring six goals and two assists while Rieger lit the lamp twice and added a handful of assists. Braden Shewchuk tallied a hat-trick along with an assist while Caidyn Prediger Talon Sandry shared the same statline of one goal and two assists. Hayden Ulriksen and Nick Mckee also scored and Hawkes and Koltin Fyrk both had a helper.

Mac Angus led the Mustangs in scoring once again for game two, scoring three goals while teammates Gyman, Farnsworth, and Salkin each had a pair of helpers. Tye Farnsworth had the other goal in the contest.

Hawkes was between the pipes in game two for PA, making 20 saves for the win.

Kerr was once again in net for Moose Jaw, stopping 24 of 39 where the Mustangs fall to 0-5 on the year.

The Predators now have a break before their next contest on May 25 when they take on the Saskatoon Jr. Swat on the road.
