Porcupine Plain looking to its future and success

From the low cost of living, exciting tourism and booming agriculture community, the town of Porcupine Plain is celebrating its success.

Last week was Economic Development Week and although the COVID-19 pandemic has affected all communities, things are looking up for Porcupine Plain residents.

Manager of Affinity Credit Union in Porcupine Plain Deanna Smith told northeastNOW that the town is recovering in some respects but thriving in others.

“I think we’re seeing some revitalization around here. People are moving from the urban centres.”

With the rising pressure of inflation, Smith explained that some areas have been hit harder than others.

“The cost of food and transportation has gone up, and it’s sort of making it harder to get people in the doors of restaurants,” she said.

The food and drink sector isn’t the only area feeling the pressure as residents are approximately three hours away from any large urban centre.

“Even the tracking of getting goods from the cities to Porcupine Plain has spiked with inflation,” said Smith.

Other things people in the community must consider are travelling to medical appointments and procedures that aren’t available locally.

Although there have been setbacks, the town boasts a large tourism sector which has been a boost to the economy.

Smith said that with summer coming up, areas like Greenwater Provincial Park also contribute to the economy and those hoping to enjoy the warmer weather.

“We find a lot of people who have bought cottages or built cabins in the communities surrounding this area like the villages and in the hamlets.”

Despite summer being the peak season, Smith also mentions the area is the perfect getaway for snowmobilers.
