RCMP close historical death case

May 30, 2023 | 5:17 PM

Saskatchewan RCMP have confirmed human remains found last April at the Big Island Lake Cree Nation Landfill, belong to a man who was reported missing almost 10 years prior.

Randy Wallace George’s death is not believed to be suspicious in nature.

George was 38 years old when he was first reported missing to Pierceland RCMP in July 2013. He had been dropped off on Hwy #21 near the north side of the Big Island Lake Cree Territory and was last seen walking north on the highway.

The remains were found on the afternoon of April 21, 2023, and roughly three days later, a forensic autopsy was conducted by the Saskatchewan Coroners Service. The autopsy determined the human remains belonged to an adult male, who had been deceased for approximately 10 years.

Saskatchewan RCMP’s Historical Case Unit (HCU) then compared these details to missing person files from the area in that time range.

Earlier this month, familial DNA comparisons and analysis were completed and it determined the remains belonged to George. His family has been notified.

“Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time,” the RCMP said in a statement. “Whenever a person is reported missing to Saskatchewan RCMP, we remain committed to locating them and bringing them home, regardless of the time that has passed.”

The Historical Case Unit, which includes a provincial missing person coordinator, takes carriage of historical missing persons investigations. Find profiles of Saskatchewan’s historical missing persons, as well as unidentified human remains, here.

Anyone with information about any missing person, even if time has passed, is encouraged to report it to their local police.

Information can also be submitted anonymously by contacting Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers.
