North Stars Steele primed for next chapter with SAIT Trojans

It is said there’s no place like home, and for Battlefords North Stars defenceman Wilson Steele, back in his hometown of Calgary is where he’ll be heading for the next stage of his hockey career, with the SAIT Trojans.

Steele is coming off a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) championship with the North Stars to cap his junior career, spent exclusively the last three years in the Battlefords.

Now, as he shifts his focus to the post-secondary level this fall, Steele said he’s looking forward to the opportunity ahead.

“It’s pretty exciting and especially for the family; they’re all really happy because I’ll be playing at home, so I’m looking forward to that,” Steele said, letting out a smile. “It’s obviously a really good school and a really good team, so there’s a good opportunity for me hockey-wise.”

Steele was a tower of strength on the backend for the Stars during his time with the team.

An excellent skater with an imposing 6-foot-4, 200-pound frame, Steele set career highs across the board in his 20-year-old season with the team, scoring five goals and 16 points in 44 games, while also providing a valuable physical edge to the North Stars’ lineup as evidenced by his 209 penalty minutes, good for fourth amongst all players.

Head coach of the Stars, Brayden Klimosko said it was nice to see Steele get a chance to continue his hockey career at the post-secondary level, after really establishing himself as a thorn in the side to play against over the last three years.

“I thought he had a great second half of the season and improved lots and SAIT got a good one there with Wilson,” Klimosko said. “I think he improved in his footwork lots and just the way he is able to compete at a high level and be a miserable player to play against. That’s something he’ll be able to bring to that next level and I think that’s where he’s going to really find some success.”

Steele joins a SAIT Trojans program that finished the 2022-23 season third in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) standings with a 13-10-1 record.
