Thunderstorm brings nearly 50 mm of rain to La Ronge

A severe thunderstorm that struck La Ronge on Wednesday brought with it nearly 50 millimetres of rain.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, 46.7 mm of rain fell in La Ronge in only a few hours. That sets a record for the greatest amount of precipitation for that day.

The former record was 23.6 mm in 1976.

“That’s quite a bit of rain for the ground to try and absorb, especially in La Ronge where there lots of rocks around there, so it makes it even harder for the water to absorb,” said meteorologist Terri Lang.

“We also got a picture via Facebook that looked like at least nickel-size hail if not quarter-size hail as well.”

More rain is forecasted in La Ronge in the coming days. Thunderstorms are expected to move through Thursday and Friday before dissipating over the weekend.

“It’s going to be that thundershower type of thing that will keep going on and off for the next little while for sure,” Lang said.

May had been a relatively dry month for La Ronge with only seven millimetres of rain up until May 23. In April, La Ronge only received 24.4 millimetres of precipitation out of a normal 35.8 mm.

Although a lot of rain fell Wednesday, two nearby fires continue to burn uncontained including the Wistigo and Sharp fires. The fire weather index for the majority of Saskatchewan, however, is low risk.
