RCMP give kids lesson in bike safety to ready them for summer

Kids in the Battlefords got some first-hand training in bicycle safety this week when the RCMP offered its annual Bike Rodeo.

The event was held May 29 to 31 at the Access Communications Centre (previously the Civic Centre) in North Battleford, and outside the Alex Dillabough Centre in Battleford June 1 and 2.

Third graders from local schools participated in the event.

Battlefords RCMP Cpl. James Fenrich coordinated the event, along with Battlefords Victim Services.

“The important part of this event is – it’s not only about bicycle safety, but it’s growing the relationship between the youth of today and the RCMP, building that trust, and reinforcing the [sense of] safety and security they have with us,” he said.

Fenrich noted the main goal of bike rodeo is to increase bicycle safety, and give kids some basic tips they can use when out riding their bikes.

“We teach them their hand signals, and we go through the stop signs and yield signs,” he added.

The kids also participated in a bit of an obstacle course with their bikes.

“It teaches them how to control their bike, and how to operate it in a safe and proper manner,” Fenrich said. “Grade 3 kids are at that age where they get out and about, and go down the street on their own. We just want to make sure they are safe and secure as best we can, and reinforce that with them.”

Fenrich noted the bike rodeo is supported through a number of sponsors. SGI, one of the major sponsors, provided funding to purchase 18 bikes for the program.

“We have 18 elementary schools within the RCMP detachment area for the Battlefords detachment,” he said. “At the end of the event, every school that attends will receive a bike.”

Organizers plan to hold a draw at each school for the kids that attended. One of the participants will win that bike.
