A Prince Albert woman is back home after winning multiple gold medals at a national competition.

Natasha Nagle was in Calgary in late May for the 2023 Speedo Canadian Masters Championships where she ended up competing in the 30-34 age category.

She took home the top spot in the 400M freestyle, beating second place by roughly 23 seconds. The 800M freestyle is where she really shined, winning gold and topping the second-place swimmer by just under two minutes.

“There weren’t too many people entered in the (800M) because it was one of the longer ones and people are more interested in the sprints,” Nagle said. “I also think it depends if you swam growing up, I swam through all of high school and a lot of people at the event did not.”

She also took the bronze medal in the 50M freestyle and 200M freestyle, while also finishing fourth in the 100M freestyle and fifth in the 50M and 100M butterfly. In the 100M freestyle, Nagle was just 0.6 seconds behind third place.

“My coach (Hazem Hussein) was very encouraging, so that played a huge factor in my success,” Nagle added.

Also taking part in the championship was P.A.’s Karin Ferris. She ended up competing in the 50-54 age category and finished seventh in the 50M breaststroke and 100M freestyle, while also securing eighth place in the 50M freestyle.

Nagle and Ferris are both a part of the Prince Albert Sharks Swim Club.

“Their hard work, perseverance, and achievements are a testament to their dedication to swimming,” said a statement from the club. “It’s remarkable to see them make history and deliver such incredible results.”

The Championships ended up hosting 89 teams from across the country with a total of 622 athletes taking part.
