Two students from the Battlefords are being recognized with 2023 scholarships presented by the Battlefords and District Community Foundation (BDCF).

Josh Fransoo was named the recipient of this year’s award from the Peter Lewochko Fund in the value of $8,174. Fransoo was accepted into the College of Education program at the University of Saskatchewan.

He said he appreciates the support.

“This scholarship will lift a burden off my shoulders, and help me in my university career,” Fransoo said in the release.

The Peter Lewochko Fund provides annual scholarships to students pursuing post-secondary education in agriculture, education or engineering. Lewochko was a long-time Saskatchewan farmer before his passing in 2013.

“He established this scholarship as a legacy to his belief in the value of education,” BDCF executive director Kathy McNinch said.

Ethan Nolin is the 2023 recipient of the Hazel Asmussen Fund award for $1,175. In September he will enter the second year of the Music Performance Honours (Flute) program at Western University in London, Ont. His future goal is to be a musician in a professional orchestra.

“I appreciate this award because it allows me the opportunity to study in the field I love,” Nolin said.

The Hazel Asmussen Fund was established with BDCF in 2007.

Asmussen, a retired nurse and local artist, who passed away in 2009, “had long been involved in community building,” McNinch said. “She created this fund to help post-secondary fine arts students with their school expenses.”

BDCF reports it currently manages more than 30 funds that will contribute to a range of interests from the arts and healthcare to post-secondary scholarships and recreation. The organization will distribute over $60,000 in annual community grants and scholarships this year.
