More Heat Warnings?

Out of the frying pan: more heat warnings possible, temperatures staying well above average

Although Prince Albert is officially out of a heat warning, the city is still in the grips of weather far hotter than average for this time of year. Another heat warning may be just around the corner as well.

Environment Canada predicts a run of days well above average temperatures for Prince Albert, including temperatures by the beginning of next week that could drift into heat warning territory. It’s a continuation of what’s already been a scorching late spring and early summer.

“We are going to stay above averages with those temperatures in the mid to high 20s,” said Justin Shelley, a meteorologist with Environment Canada. “Some of the forecast guidances are showing slightly warmer temperatures than what we’re predicting right now.”

Normally, the average high for early June hovers between 20 and 21C in the Prince Albert area. This week started off with temperatures in the 30s and will be in the high 20s for most of the rest of the week as well.

A heat warning, meanwhile, doesn’t take effect in the area until we get a run of days (just one isn’t enough for a warning) with a daytime high of at least 32C and an overnight low of 16C. While it’s not unheard of, it is unusual that we’ve already seen one this year.

“Prince Albert had its sixth warmest May on record, so it definitely was an early start to the warmth,” Shelley said. “So far this month, our average daytime high in Prince Albert has been 28.7C, which is at least seven degrees above normal.”

That pattern isn’t breaking any time soon, either. The lowest daytime high for the next seven days is forecasted to be 25C, while the highest, coming on Monday of next week, could get up as high as 32C (though because the overnight low is supposed to be below 16C, this wouldn’t be enough to start worries of a heat warning).

“Definitely some anomalous heat to not only end the spring but just start June, and that looks like it’s going to progress through the next week or so at least,” said Shelley.

According to Environment Canada, even though it’s been a hotter start to the month, we haven’t broken any temperature records in Prince Albert in June just yet. The hottest recorded temperature for the area on the day of June 8 was 31.8C, recorded in 1996.
