North Sask. artists win big at 2023 SCMA Awards

The best of Saskatchewan country music was honoured this past weekend and some local talent won big.

The Saskatchewan Country Music Association (SCMA) Awards took place on Saturday in Assiniboia with performers Jake Vaadeland and Dean Bernier winning top awards.

Jake Vaadeland, who was raised in the Cut Knife area, was recognized for top Alternative Country Album for Everybody But Me.

Meanwhile, Dean Bernier, who teaches with the Firebird North Sistema Music Project, was named Fiddler of the Year for the second straight year.

Another big winner from the weekend was the Town of Big River as Country at the Creek was named Music Festival of the Year.

The event will mark its 11th annual festivities this July with a host of musicians headlined by Trevor Panczak, Shantaia, and Petric. The festival runs from July 6-9th.

The big winners from the awards ceremony included Shantaia who picked up Female Artist of the Year, Justin Labrash who won Male Artist of the Year and the Hunter Brothers who claimed four awards including an SCMA Achievement Award and Entertainer of the Year.
