Cooke to host RBC qualifying scramble tournament

A uniquely formatted tournament is coming to Cooke Municipal Golf Course later on this month, and the winners of it will have a chance to earn first provincial and then national accolades.

Cooke will play host to the RBC PGA Scramble on Sunday, June 25. Any golfer over the age of 19 with a Golf Canada handicap can play, but they need to sign up by Sunday, June 18. The scramble is in teams of four.

“Essentially what it is, it’s a fun day of golf in a team format,” said Darcy Myers, head professional at Cooke Municipal Golf Course. “The top one or two teams from our event here will qualify for a regional qualifier, which is down in Regina. That leg of the event will be accompanied by a PGA of Canada golf professional.”

The winner of that event gets to take their golf skills to Cape Breton to take part in the national tournament. If that winner comes from Cooke, they’d go with something of a reputation to uphold. Myers went to regionals himself in this event when he took part several years ago and then, from there, got to play at the national level.

“Over the last number of years, teams that have qualified out of Prince Albert at Cooke have gone on to do quite well in regionals,” Myers said. “We had another team that went on to nationals as well, so we’ve got a pretty good track record here.”

Traditional tournaments aren’t played in scramble format, and most golf scrambles are fairly informal. In that way, this tournament is quite unique, and it offers players a unique chance to take their golf game to a higher level.

“It’s such a fantastic experience,” said Myers. “All golfers can participate and have an opportunity to participate in a national tournament.”

Myers added they’ve already had about a dozen teams register for the event. He also said they won’t have to do too much work on the course prior to it, as it’s already been in good shape throughout the early season.

“Chances are still really good for people to enter and participate in this,” he said. “All it takes is one good day of good teamwork, and you can move on to the next step.”

After this event, Cooke will host the men’s and women’s senior provincial championships, which will begin on July 17.
