Forty-one graduates from La Ronge’s Churchill Community High School (CCHS) are now prepared to make their mark on the world.

Hundreds of people attended the CCHS graduation ceremony Saturday at Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre. Several dignitaries were also in attendance to bring greetings including Northern Lights School Division board member Morris Cook, Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson, Cumberland MLA Doyle Vermette, La Ronge Mayor Joe Hordyski and Air Ronge Mayor Julie Baschuk.

In his speech to the crowd, Churchill Principal Scott Tomporowski explained during the last seven years, he has been able to watch the graduating class grow as people. He said each one of them have their own stories to tell about their journey so far in life, and that they have all shown resiliency and flexibility as they had to adjust to the trials and tribulations of growing up and going to school during a worldwide pandemic.

Tomporowski told them that as they head into the world, they should dream big, set goals for themselves, have confidence in their abilities and have fun along the way.

“‘Mitho-pimatisowin’ – the good life – is what the school is trying to prepare you for,” he said. “I hope you remember those little lessons along the way that help you be who you want to be. My hope is that CCHS offered you a place to be yourself and live the best life that fits you.”

This year’s valedictorian is Reay Mackay and the winner for academic proficiency with a final average mark of 95.4 per cent is Mila Kuppenbender. In his speech, Mackay thanked everyone for coming to the ceremony and celebrating the milestone with them. He noted the future plans of his fellow graduates are just as unique and diverse as they are.

“Parents, family, friends, neighbours, teachers, coaches, etc., many of whom are present here today, have all made an impact on our lives big and small, as well as the circumstances in which we have grown up in,” Mackay said. “The cultural and geographical beauty and uniqueness of the tri-communities we live have undoubtedly shaped our worldview in very positive ways. These influences have allowed us to succeed through many hardships.”
