Duck Lake dispute leads to physical altercation, arrest

Jun 20, 2023 | 1:00 PM

A dispute between two groups of three men in Duck Lake earlier this month has resulted in charges being laid against one person.

RCMP confirmed they were told of an assault outside a residence in the community on June 5, shortly after midnight.

When officers arrived, they found three injured men, all of whom refused multiple offers to call for medical help.

Police say that one group of three men went onto the private property of another person and there was a physical altercation with the second group of three men, one of which had been inside the home and came out to stop the fight.

According to the FSIN, the incident was sparked over cruelty to the victim’s dog and led to the group of men socializing at the neighbour’s residence going into the victim’s yard.

Information from the FSIN news release says the father of the victim, Jeff Mike, has stated the incident was racially motivated and that four victims went to the hospital for medical treatment.

One of the people injured had a punctured lung.

“There is no reasonable excuse that would allow a large gang of people to invade one’s private property and proceed to violently assault an incredibly disadvantaged small group of men and their elderly parents. This is unacceptable,” FSIN Vice Chief Dutch Lerat said in a statement.

According to the RCMP, any conflict had ended before officers arrived and despite their offers of getting medical assistance for the victims, the only help taken was a ride for one of the men to their residence.

Two days later, they charged a 54-year-old Duck Lake man with assault and assault while choking.

The investigation is active and ongoing, said the police.

“We must respect all pending court proceedings, where further information about this incident will be disclosed,” said the police in an emailed statement. “As with any investigation, if and when further related information is reported to police, it will be investigated fully. It’s important to note that all RCMP investigations are taken seriously, and all victims are treated the same and will not be discriminated against.”
